Privacy Policy
Last updated: 10 October 2026
SplitRide (operated at splitride.co.za) connects commuters travelling in the same direction so they can share rides and split transport costs. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we protect it, and the choices you have. We process personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 4 of 2013 (POPIA).
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information:
- Account information — your name, email address, password, and profile photo.
- Sign-in with Google — if you create an account using Google, we receive your name, email address and profile picture associated with that Google Account. We do not receive your Google password, and we do not access your Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive or any other Google content.
- Contact and profile details — mobile number, bio, and your saved or favourite routes.
- Verification information — for drivers, your identity document, driver's licence, vehicle registration, and vehicle photos. This is used only to verify that a driver is eligible to offer rides.
- Location information — pickup and destination points you enter, and, during an active trip, the trip's live route so passengers can track the ride.
- Ride and payment data — bookings, trips, fares, wallet balance, top-ups, withdrawals, and payout details.
- Communications — in-app messages with drivers or passengers, notifications, reviews and ratings, and support requests.
- Technical data — device type, browser, and basic usage information that helps us keep the service secure and working.
2. Why We Use Your Information
- To create and secure your account and sign you in.
- To match passengers with drivers travelling the same route at the same time.
- To calculate and split the cost of a trip between passengers.
- To enable live trip tracking, in-app chat, and safety features for the people on a trip.
- To verify drivers' identities, licences and vehicles.
- To process wallet top-ups, ride payments, earnings and withdrawals.
- To send you service notifications about your bookings, matches, trips and payments.
- To prevent fraud, misuse and unsafe behaviour, and to meet our legal obligations.
- To improve SplitRide's features, reliability and safety.
3. What Other Users Can See
When you join or offer a trip, other users on that trip can see your display name, profile photo, rating, and general trip details such as the pickup and destination points and travel time. We do not display your email address, identity documents, licence or banking details to other users.
4. Location Data
Location is central to matching and safety. We use the location details you enter to find compatible rides, and while a trip is in progress the route may be shared with the passengers on that trip and stored so the trip record and safety features remain available afterwards. You can stop sharing by ending the trip or by turning off location access in your device settings, although some features will then not work.
5. Sharing Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with:
- Other users on the same trip, to the limited extent described above.
- Service providers that help us operate SplitRide, such as hosting, mapping, verification, communication and payment providers, who may process information only on our instructions.
- Law enforcement, regulators or courts, where we are legally required to do so, or where it is necessary to protect the safety of a user or the public.
6. How Long We Keep Information
We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. Trip, booking, payment and review records are kept for as long as needed to operate the service, resolve disputes, meet tax and legal requirements, and maintain safety records. Verification documents are kept only while a driver remains verified and for a reasonable period afterwards where required. When information is no longer needed, we delete or de-identify it.
7. How We Protect Information
Access to personal information is restricted to staff and systems that need it, verification documents are stored in private storage and are not publicly accessible, and we apply access controls so that users can only reach their own records. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information and will notify you and the Information Regulator as required if a security compromise affects you.
8. Your Rights Under POPIA
You may, at any time:
- Ask us what personal information we hold about you and request a copy of it.
- Ask us to correct or update information that is inaccurate, misleading or out of date.
- Ask us to delete information that we are not required to keep.
- Object to processing, or withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
- Complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa if you believe your information has been mishandled.
Requests can be sent to info@splitride.co.za. We may ask you to verify your identity before we act on a request.
9. Cookies and Sign-In
We use the minimum cookies and local storage needed to keep you signed in and to remember your preferences. When you choose "Continue with Google", the authentication step is handled by Google and is subject to Google's own privacy policy.
10. Age Restriction
SplitRide is intended for people aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as SplitRide develops. Material changes will be communicated in the app or by email, and the "Last updated" date above will change.
